Serving more than 22 million customers, American Water of Vorhees, New Jersey is the leading privately-held water service company in the United States. In a post 9/11 world, American Water, like others in their industry, was forced to re-assess the risk of a terrorist attack related to their operations and evaluate their security solutions. They found that they needed to protect the integrity of the water supply, the infrastructure of water delivery, and the potentially hazardous chemicals used in their operations. To help ensure that the company would be prepared for the new challenges, the company conducted a comprehensive search for a partner that could meet all of its emerging security needs on a national basis.
The company tapped global industry leader Tyco, and has installed Tyco's state-of-the-art video and digital security solutions in more than 100 water facility sites throughout the United States. Tyco worked closely with American Water to design a customized, one-of-a-kind system from the ground up, with numerous planning meetings and site visits. The system allows water facility site managers to view video and manage security functions on-site, and also allows them to manage the site's security system from anywhere in the world via the Internet. The data is also sent to Tyco's servers, providing critical back-up in case of a major emergency. The sites are equipped with closed circuit television cameras and digital video recorders for video capture and storage. An advanced command and control system provides plant managers with a single console for all access control, video surveillance and alarm management functions, making it fast and easy to manage the system. An intuitive interface also reduces training time and costs, as well as the risk of operator error.
The breadth of Tyco’s installation resources allowed Tyco to meet American Water's aggressive installation schedule, with systems installed in more than 100 facilities in just 300 days. American Water is pleased with the system’s capabilities, particularly the ability to control the system remotely. The system provides access to centralised information and better prepares American Water for an emergency.
