Forensic Center Harperly Hall

Problem

The recently developed Harperly Hall in Durham, England, has been hailed as one of the most progressive forensic science facilities in the world, designed to teach national and international forensic students with leading-edge technology. The National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) required the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of a new state-of-the-art CCTV security system for the facility.

Solution

The chosen solution used an IP-based CCTV system with megapixel cameras and a VideoEdge Enterprise Network Video Recorder (NVR) package with integrated motion detection. The heart of the system is a Dell Xeon processor server attached to 24 TB of RAID 5 storage of Infortrend manufacture. The VideoEdge system is based around two secure networks for system resilience and security. The main security system installation includes a total of 19 cameras both internally and externally. In the practical training block, 23 areas are set up as different crime scene scenarios and monitored non-intrusively, providing the capability for student observation. An IP-based server recording system was implemented as part of the student assessment process.
